Toddler killed when driver backs over him
A 23-month-old boy was run over and killed Friday as his baby-sitter backed an SUV out of the driveway of his family’s Santa Ana home, authorities said.
The baby-sitter apparently never saw the boy, who is believed to have run out of the house and tripped and fallen behind the vehicle, said Jose Gonzalez, public information officer for the Santa Ana Police Department.
“After an initial investigation, it does appear to be an accident,” Gonzalez said. “The driver did not see the toddler.”
The incident occurred about 3 p.m. in the 3000 block of West Mary Common in a gated community, Gonzalez said.
The boy was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
No charges were filed against the 33-year-old baby-sitter, who Gonzalez said was a friend of the family.
The toddler’s 11-year-old sister was also home at the time, Gonzalez said. The parents were not.
