First chances, last chances and what not to miss today
Feast of San Gennaro Brooklyn-born television star Jimmy Kimmel and his “Man Show” accomplice, Adam Carolla, will host Los Angeles’ sixth annual Feast of San Gennaro. Based on the old New York “Little Italy” tradition, the “feast” celebrates Italian culture with nonstop live music, food, “bada” bingo, bocce, food, carnival games and rides, food, children’s activities and cooking demonstrations. 1651 Highland Ave., Hollywood. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; also Saturday and Sunday. $5; 11 and younger, free. (818) 508-0082.
The National The band, formed in Cincinnati and now hailing from indie-rock mecca Brooklyn, centers its melancholic balladry on singer Matt Berninger’s low murmurs, expanded by casually complex, guitar-shimmery arrangements. The Wiltern, 3790 Wilshire Blvd., L.A. 9 p.m. $20. (213) 380-5005.
Richard Thompson Just how much of a wizard is this English singer, songwriter and guitarist? Enough to cover, of all things, Britney Spears’ “Oops! … I Did It Again” and turn it into a riveting meditation on recurring romantic missteps. Needless to say, when he delves into his material, the level jumps all the higher. Royce Hall, UCLA, 340 Royce Drive, L.A. 8 p.m. $22 to $46. (310) 825-2101.
Lady Jazz Kickin’ Brass The eighth annual Instrumental Women concert will feature some great instrumentalists who happen to be female. John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. E., Hollywood. 7 p.m. $20 to $30. (323) 461-3673.
Wave Fest Michael McDonald, Patti Austin, Marc Antoine and Poncho Sanchez headline this show. Greek Theatre, 2700 N. Vermont Ave., L.A. 7 p.m. $29.75 to $129.75. (323) 665-5857.
