Chiseled good looks
With its blue-granite exterior, a turret and a parapet, the one-story Wilkins House is a standout in its northeast Altadena neighborhood.
The home was built in 1929 by Hugh Walker Wilkins, a Pennsylvania stonemason, as his personal residence. His wife, Mary, designed the house in the Spanish Revival style, popular at that time.
The house reflects aspects of the couple’s personalities. Some parts of the home are stately, such as the spacious rooms with 10-foot-high coved ceilings and the formal gardens. Others are whimsical: The house has a round, tower-shaped room that gives it some resemblance to a medieval castle.
The nearly half-acre property rests on the edge of Eaton Canyon and has canyon and mountain views.
About this house: In 1995, the current owners started what became a 12-year restoration project. Since then, their focus has been on bringing the house back to the way it was meant to look during the Roaring ’20s. The home was featured on HGTV for its English gardens. The grounds include lily and koi ponds, California oaks, boxwood hedges and stone walls.
