Applegate’s hoping for a good vibe come awards night
In a TV season of little dazzle, Christina Applegate can claim the lone hit.
ABC’s “Samantha Who?” is the season’s biggest new show, and today Applegate was nominated for a Golden Globe for best performance by an actress in a TV comedy or musical. She plays a young woman suffering from amnesia who is in the process of remaking herself after discovering her older self wasn’t all that great.
The writers strike interrupted the show’s momentum, and Applegate says she can’t wait for the dispute to be over so that everyone, especially the crew, can go back to work.
Asked if she would attend the Golden Globes ceremony Jan. 13 if the strike hadn’t ended and the guild hadn’t granted the show a waiver, Applegate said her instinctive response was to say, “Of course!” But then she realized that would mean crossing the picket line.
“It’s really hard to say,” she said. “You’d be crossing the line possibly. But at the same time, this is a time when these people are recognizing everyone. The writers are being recognized for their work as well. Hopefully they can work it out, because this is a celebration more than anything else.”
Applegate said she enjoyed attending the Globe ceremony because of its casual vibe, though she wasn’t sure whether that would change because of the strike.
“It’s a great evening and it’s very low-key and a lot of fun,” she said. “Everyone is together from film and TV, and it’s a really fun evening. I really hope the strike is over before that. But if it’s not, facing that, I’ll know in my heart what I want to do. But at this point I have no idea. That would just stink.”
