Confirming one of Hollywood's worst-kept secrets, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas announced Friday that 20-year-old Shia LaBeouf has been selected to star in the next "Indiana Jones" movie.
LaBeouf, who has the lead role in this weekend's new thriller "Disturbia" and the summer release "Transformers," will star opposite Harrison Ford, who originated the whip-cracking archeologist character in 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark."
The film, due in theaters in the summer of 2008, will be directed by Spielberg and produced by Lucas. The specific role LaBeouf will play in the new film has not been revealed. The math works for him to play Ford's grandson, as the veteran actor is 44 years LaBeouf's senior.
LaBeouf, who also starred in "Holes" and "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints," is scheduled to host "Saturday Night Live" this weekend and plays a lead voice in this summer's animated movie "Surf's Up."
