Shiite cleric bans 'honor' killings

Lebanon's most senior Shiite Muslim cleric issued a religious edict banning the custom of killing a woman for allegedly bringing shame to her family, which he called "a repulsive act."

The \o7fatwa \f7by Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah was a rare condemnation of the practice by a prominent cleric. Fadlallah's office said it had reports that such killings were increasing.

The killings, which occur in many parts of the Middle East, are illegal, but perpetrators often go unpunished or receive light sentences.
