THE $49 DEAL

Life on the edge in ancient Colorado

August 05, 2007|Rosemary McClure | Times Staff Writer

Visit Colorado's Mesa Verde National Park, one of the nation's richest archeological preserves, and spend $49 for a room on Thursday nights.

The deal: The special rate, which hasn't been offered at the park since the 1970s, is available at the Far View Lodge on Thursdays through the end of September. The hotel is also offering Los Angeles Times readers a $269 rate, which is good for two nights' lodging (Thursdays and Fridays only) and includes a half-day guided tour of the park and dinner for two at the hotel's Metate Restaurant. This rate is also good through the end of September.

The park and hotel: Mesa Verde, near the Four Corners area in southwestern Colorado, is a World Heritage Site known for its cliff dwellings and more than 4,000 sites once inhabited by the ancestral Pueblos. The lodge emphasizes Native American culture and cuisine; each of its 150 rooms has a private balcony with a view up to 100 miles across three states.

Where is it? P.O. Box 277, Mancos, CO 81328.

Reservations: Call (800) 449-2288, www.visitmesaverde.com. Ask for LAT49 to book the two-day package. Special rates do not include taxes and are subject to availability.
