The Chicago way

August 10, 2007

Re "L.A. aims for a more urbanized downtown," Aug. 8

If developers, bureaucrats and users work together, L.A. can have a beautiful downtown. But the bottom line is that it is the users who will ultimately decide. If they want an urban garbage pit, they'll get one. If they raise the bar and make their bureaucrats enforce it, they'll get a world-class city.

For starters, since The Times is now part of the Tribune Co. family, send some reporters on a fact-finding mission to Chicago, which loves its architecture and space. Los Angeles should learn to do the same.
