Keeping cool in volcano country

August 12, 2007

I read with interest "Capitals of Cool" [Aug. 5], describing places to beat the summer's heat, but you missed my favorite place to cool off during the summer and maybe light a fire during the night. Volcano, at 3,500 feet on the Big Island of Hawaii, is cool during the day (70s and cooler). No air-conditioning is needed there. And temperatures in the upper 80s and warm Pacific waters are only a 40-minute drive away.
