Spacewalkers install gyroscope

Nation in Brief / TEXAS

August 14, 2007|From Times Wire Reports

Spacewalking astronauts wrestled a 600-pound gyroscope into place on the International Space Station, while NASA managers in Houston assessed a small but deep pit in shuttle Endeavour's heat shield.

In the second of four spacewalks planned for the shuttle mission, astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Dave Williams replaced one of the space station's four gyroscopes, which spin like tops to keep the outpost properly positioned in orbit without the use of gas-burning rocket thrusters.

If managers decide to make repairs to the shuttle, the work would take place no earlier than Friday, officials said.
