Boyhood days with Frankl

August 23, 2007

It was fascinating to read your article ["Modern, Inside-Out," Aug. 16] about Christopher Long's new book on Paul Frankl. My father, Antoine Vittal, worked closely with Paul for years, virtually until Paul died, executing his designs, building prototypes and custom pieces, generating manufacturing templates and drawings for the production versions of his works, and developing the technique for bleaching the cork tops on tables and case goods.

I have fond memories of Paul as I was growing up: He visited us at home, and we visited him in his studio on Doheny Drive and in his home in Palos Verdes Estates. I have photos Paul took of me in my dad's shop when I was a boy. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
