More arrests made in fuel-hike protest

August 25, 2007|From Times Wire Reports

The military junta moved swiftly to crush the latest in a series of protests against fuel price hikes, arresting more than 10 activists in the main city of Yangon before they could start any action. At least 50 people have been detained since Wednesday, state-controlled media reported, as the government tries to end increasingly daring demonstrations.

The latest arrests came after protests spread beyond Yangon and amid mounting international condemnation of the government's suppression of the peaceful, but rare, displays of opposition in the tightly controlled country.
