Smith powers Central Florida

December 02, 2007|From the Associated Press

Kevin Smith ran for 284 yards and four touchdowns, moving into second place behind Barry Sanders on the NCAA's single-season rushing list, and Central Florida rolled to a 44-25 win over Tulsa on Saturday in the Conference USA title game at Orlando, Fla.

Smith, the nation's leading rusher, entered the game fourth all-time with 2,164 yards -- 464 behind Sanders' 1989 total. The junior had 24 carries for 161 yards at halftime, and made that total even more gaudy with a 74-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the Knights (10-3).

Smith has 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns in his last four games. He passed Marcus Allen's 1981 total of 2,342 with a six-yard run in the third quarter, and still has another game to play. Central Florida will close its season with a Liberty Bowl appearance.

Tulsa fell to 9-4.

--

Central Michigan 35, Miami (Ohio) 10 -- Dan LeFevour ran for 166 yards and threw for 185 to help the Chippewas (8-5) beat the RedHawks (6-7) at Detroit and claim their second straight Mid-American Conference title.

LeFevour ran for two scores and threw for another, giving him 41 touchdowns -- 17 rushing, 23 passing and one receiving -- this year.

No. 21 Brigham Young 48, San Diego State 27 -- Harvey Unga ran for 161 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead the visiting Cougars (10-2, 8-0) over the Aztecs (4-8, 3-5) in a Mountain West Conference game.

BYU has won 16 consecutive conference games and nine overall this season since consecutive losses to UCLA and Tulsa.

--

Navy 38, Army 3 -- Reggie Campbell had a school-record 98-yard kickoff return, and the Midshipmen (8-4) defeated the mistake-prone Black Knights (3-9) at Baltimore for an unprecedented sixth straight win in the rivalry.

Navy improved to 52-49-7 against Army, its biggest lead in a series that began in 1890.

Although Navy's potent offense was limited to 294 yards, the Midshipmen set a school record for points in a season (479).

--

Florida International 38, North Texas 19 -- Paul McCall threw for 228 yards and three touchdowns in his first start, and the Golden Panthers (1-11, 1-6) beat the Mean Green (2-10, 1-6) in a Sun Belt Conference game at Miami to end major college football's longest current losing streak at 23 games. Florida International had last won on Dec. 3, 2005, against Middle Tennessee State.

Florida Atlantic 38, Troy 32 -- Rusty Smith passed for 291 yards and two touchdowns and the Owls (7-5, 6-1) had a late defensive stand to beat the Trojans (8-4, 6-1) at Troy, Ala., to earn a share of the Sun Belt title.
