"The Nutcracker": In Thursday's Guide, an article on performances of "The Nutcracker" in Southern California implied that the first American performance of the ballet took place in New York in the 1950s under the direction of George Balanchine. In fact, the first complete American performance was staged by the San Francisco Ballet in 1944. Balanchine's version is generally regarded as the production largely responsible for popularizing the ballet here.
