Official sees resurgence by Islamic courts

December 14, 2007|From Times Wire Reports

A radical Islamic group that was driven from power in Somalia is making a significant comeback, and the government can do little to stop it, an official said as shelling and gun battles killed at least 17 people in the capital, Mogadishu.

Sheik Qasim Ibrahim Nur, director of security at Somalia's National Security Ministry, said the Islamic Courts Union was poised to launch a massive attack.

The group was driven from power last year by a military push led by Ethiopian troops. It has since waged an insurgency that has killed thousands.
