MY FAVORITE WEEKEND

Kevan Hall

Fashion Designer

December 20, 2007|Vicki Jo Radovsky

"Weekends are about hanging out with family," says the Detroit-born designer, who lives in Encino with wife, Deborah, and kids Asia, 17, and Evan, 12. Although he's known for his glamorous fluid-yet-tailored red carpet gowns, Hall himself likes to keep things low-key.

WINDING DOWN Friday after work I'd stop by the gym for a workout and chill in some steam. Then I'd have dinner with the family and watch TV. It's a luxury for me to sleep in Saturday morning and thumb through the paper. SOMETHING FISHY My kids are into marine biology, so we'd head down to Big Fish on Ventura to see the new arrivals -- the sunfish, sea horses, and sea anemones -- and pick up a couple of fish for our saltwater and freshwater tank. I've done a collection inspired by the reefs. I'd also hit Barnes & Noble for home design magazines and architecture books -- I'm in the process of designing a new couture salon. Also entertainment magazines, to see the week's fashion "don'ts!" We'd go to Mulberry Street Pizza for lunch -- great vegetarian pizza with all kinds of interesting toppings. BROTHERLY LOVE Saturday night we'd have dinner at my brother's, [actor/director/writer] Vondie Curtis Hall, and all the cousins would see each other. His wife, [actress/director/writer] Kasi Lemmons, is a great gourmet cook. CONGREGATE, CAFFEINATE Sunday we're up early for church, Bel Air Presbyterian on Mulholland. After services they serve coffee and doughnuts -- even frappuccino -- and there's fun fellowship with everybody. For brunch we'd get a table under the gazebo at the Inn of the Seventh Ray. I'd get waffles with fresh fruit or Dungeness crab. Down the street is Hidden Treasures, a wonderful little store. My daughter's into vintage. The kids shop for something hip and cool, and I shop for inspiration. I have my daughter try on everything. HIGH NOTE In the evening we'd go to Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, where my son's been singing in "La Boheme." That's a pretty full weekend -- I'd need another to recover.
