Parts of Bay Bridge found on beach

December 26, 2007|From the Associated Press

Pieces of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge that broke off when a container ship struck it in November have shown up at Half Moon Bay.

Officials are working to remove a 15-ton piece of the bridge's fender that washed up on San Mateo County's Redondo Beach.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and state Department of Transportation will dismantle, then remove, the 20-foot-wide piece of black plastic-covered steel this week.

Officials may attempt to reuse it, either on the Bay Bridge or elsewhere.

Another large piece of fender was found floating between Alcatraz and Angel islands on the day the Cosco Busan crashed into the bridge. The Nov. 7 accident tore a gash into the ship's hull. Nearly 60,000 tons of fuel leaked into the water.

Officials believe one or two other 20-foot segments are still out there.
