Jews, Palestinians must share the land

December 31, 2007

Re "Struggle rooted in land," Column One, Dec. 27

Thank you for the article explaining the latest conflict over Israeli West Bank settlements. Palestinian Daoud Nassar's determination to hold onto his family's land, his faith in nonviolent resistance and his global organizing in the Israeli, Palestinian and European human rights communities offer a visionary approach. Though the settlers laying claim to Nassar's land are Jewish, not all Jews support the settlements. This Jew believes the only real solution is for Israelis and Palestinians to learn to live together in one secular democratic state that recognizes the Palestinians' right of return.

The struggle between Israelis and Palestinians is a very simple one: The bully is bullying the victim Palestinians, grabbing their farms in violation of international law. Why not? Israel has no motivation to negotiate with good intentions; it is protected by a mighty friend -- the U.S. government, which provides arms and billions of dollars in aid. Have Israelis forgotten that once they were victims and deprived of their possessions and lives?
