Beware the Fire-Chasing Scam Artists

February 04, 2007

In "Up in Flames," Helen Storey missed an opportunity to warn future fire victims about the sharks who will circle them the day after (Jan. 14). Since house fire locations are public knowledge, crowds of these scam artists will present themselves to you as expert agents, offering to represent you to your insurance company and get you better settlement terms. The catch is that they will then invoice you for almost as much as they claim to have saved and slap a lien on your property until you either pay up or drag them through the courts, incurring legal and time costs. My advice: JUST SAY NO.
