THE WORLD | World in Brief / ANTARCTICA

February 17, 2007|From Times Wire Reports

A Japanese whaling ship stranded in Antarctic waters was on an even keel after pumps cleared water used to douse the fire that crippled it, a New Zealand government official said.

A missing crewman was reportedly found dead. Officials and environmentalists are concerned that the Nisshin Maru, carrying tens of thousands of gallons of oil, could threaten Antarctic penguins.
