Supervisors to keep tabs on Sheriff's Dept. budget

February 28, 2007|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Criticizing the way sheriff's officials have managed their budget, Los Angeles County supervisors on Tuesday ordered the Sheriff's Department to provide quarterly reports on how it spends its money.

Over the last year, sheriff's officials have spent an estimated $30 million in overtime to beef up staff in the jails in response to inmate violence and federal court concerns about overcrowding.

Also Tuesday, supervisors limited the authority of the department to manage large construction projects after cost overruns on an East Los Angeles project topped $1 million.
