Virginia Tech upsets Duke

January 07, 2007|From the Associated Press

DURHAM, N.C. — Jamon Gordon's basket with 31 seconds left in overtime gave Virginia Tech the lead, and Deron Washington blocked Greg Paulus' three-point shot as time expired to give the Hokies a 69-67 victory over No. 5 Duke on Saturday.

The Hokies (11-4, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) trailed, 67-66, when they called a timeout with 43 seconds left. They worked the ball to Gordon, who gave the Hokies a 68-67 lead.

After Duke's David McClure missed an 18-foot shot, the Blue Devils (13-2, 0-1) fouled A.D. Vassallo with 7.5 seconds left. He made the first free throw but missed the second.

Washington blocked Paulus' shot, clinching the victory and giving the Hokies redemption for their last-second defeat last season at Cameron Indoor Stadium when Sean Dockery made a 40-footer at the buzzer.
