Officials delay action on 2 jail-related lawsuits

January 10, 2007|From Times Staff Reports

The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday postponed until Jan. 16 consideration of two jail-related lawsuit settlements, including one that could pay $700,000 to the family of an inmate who died because of allegedly negligent medical care.

That suit says doctors should have examined William Louis Wilson after he was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and spousal abuse. Wilson, 62, collapsed Oct. 14, 2003, and died from blood clots in his lungs.

Supervisors will also consider a $150,000 settlement for a jail visitor who says guards beat him for refusing to surrender his cellphone.
