When affairs make news

July 04, 2007|From a Times Staff Writer

Politicians having extramarital affairs is nothing new. Some relationships, however, have made news either because they suggested a conflict of interest or in the view of some media revealed something about an elected official's character.

Former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, now a Republican presidential candidate, was married to a former reporter when he had an affair with his communications director.

Earlier this year, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom admitted to having an affair with the wife of his campaign manager. That raised eyebrows in City Hall in Los Angeles because of speculation that Newsom and Antonio Villaraigosa could both potentially run for governor in 2010.
