World gone bad

July 28, 2007

I like to think of myself as an optimist. I try to remain upbeat about the world of sports and remember that at the end of the day, these high-profile personalities are still just human beings with flaws like every one else. However, Thursday's Section D was more than even I could handle. I got past the doped-up baseball players and cyclists. I was getting used to the dogfighting fallout. Even the fact that every NBA conspiracy theorist now has a specific incident that they can point to to validate their conjecture still wasn't enough to take away my love for the games.

But when the feel-good story of the day is about the Raiders? I must concede you have broken me.

Bill Plaschke says we should get mad at pro sports' recent troubles but only hints at a better response. I suggest a big chill.

Turn off "SportsCenter." Take a brisk walk.

Forgo the game tickets and parking. See a Little League game or "The Simpsons Movie."

Forget the team jersey. Buy some pants that fit.

Take a time out from pro sports. Don't get mad. Get a life.
