Correct approach to the Constitution

June 17, 2007

Re "Indefinite detention struck down," June 12

Hooray for the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals! The imprisonment of Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri is unconstitutional and outrageous. Denying constitutional rights to terrorism suspects gives the government the power to decide who gets constitutional rights and who doesn't, because it's the government that decides which organizations are terrorist organizations. That's not how it's supposed to work.

If you give the government the power to decide who gets constitutional rights and who doesn't, you defeat the whole purpose of constitutional rights.
