Beckham to be on hand July 13

Superstition notwithstanding, David Beckham probably will be introduced to his new Galaxy teammates Friday, July 13, at the Home Depot Center.

The Major League Soccer club said Wednesday that the date had not been absolutely nailed down, but that it expected to make a formal announcement today.

Beckham, on vacation after winning the Spanish league championship with Real Madrid, will arrive in Los Angeles a few days before his introductory news conference and initial training session with the Galaxy.

His Galaxy playing debut is expected to come against Chelsea of the English Premier League on July 21 at the Home Depot Center. Beckham probably will not play in the doubleheader in Carson on July 17, when Chelsea plays the Suwon Bluewings of South Korea and the Galaxy plays the UANL Tigres of Mexico.

The Galaxy, one-third of the way through the MLS season and with only two victories to its credit, still is trying to bolster its roster ahead of Beckham's arrival. The team recently acquired former Portuguese international defender Abel Xavier and Honduran international forward Carlos Pavon, and today is expected to trade midfielder Santino Quaranta to another MLS team to create salary-cap room.
