Former school official pleads not guilty to fraud

March 06, 2007|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A former Los Angeles Unified School District administrator pleaded not guilty Monday in U.S. District Court to felony fraud charges, the U.S. attorney's office said.

Matthias Vheru, 51, is accused of secretly spending $3.7 million of the district's federal funds on math instruction materials -- a purchase that netted him nearly $1 million in royalties and other payments, authorities said. Vheru was released on a $500,000 unsecured bond.

The case is scheduled for trial April 24.
