District to stop paying Fleming's legal fees

March 07, 2007|From Times Staff Reports

The Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to stop paying the legal fees of former Supt. James Fleming, officials said.

Fleming resigned in August after a 15-year tenure in the 51,000-student district beset by a series of controversies including an Orange County Grand Jury probe; a raid of district headquarters by the district attorney's office; allegations that Fleming kept an "enemies list"; and disputes over attendance boundaries, a new school's location, portable classrooms and a new administration center.

Trustees, who agreed in September to pay Fleming's $400-per-hour legal fees related to the grand jury investigation, have to date paid more than $5,000.
