Quake survivors begin the cleanup

March 08, 2007|From Times Wire Reports

Survivors of this week's earthquake in Solok, Indonesia, wept for the victims and began cleaning up.

The magnitude 6.3 quake that struck the island of Sumatra left at least 52 dead, said Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, lowering an earlier death toll by nearly 20. He said some victims had been counted twice.

Many survivors lounged on straw mats below trees and cooked under plastic canopies.
