Drop education deadline

March 09, 2007

Re "Bush wants 'core' of education law intact," March 3

President Bush can brag all he wants about his No Child Left Behind Act, but anybody who has ever worked with children knows that its quotas and threats are more suited to assembly-line production than education. Also, the requirement that by 2014 all students be proficient in all standards (or else) is a statistical and practical impossibility.

If No Child Left Behind is to be renewed, eliminating this absurd provision is crucial. Then the issues of funding, uniform and reasonable standards and assisting lower-performing schools can be addressed by leaders who might understand the complexities of educating all students in our country.
