Kin of late senator's daughter to found nonprofit

March 12, 2007|From a Times Staff Writer

Relatives of Essie Mae Washington Williams, the African American daughter of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond, announced Sunday that they're founding a Los Angeles nonprofit to help urban families.

Washington Williams' daughter Monica Hudgens, 50, and granddaughter Maria Hutchinson, 32, plan for the EMW Resource Center to provide health education and other services to families.

The announcement was part of a book-signing appearance by Washington Williams, 82, a retired Los Angeles educator who gained notoriety after revealing in 2003 that Thurmond was her father.

The book she wrote about her experience has sold about 100,000 copies, and a documentary on her life story is in the works, she said.
