March 12, 2007

Having a high-scoring "go-to" player doesn't necessarily guarantee success in college basketball. Of the 28 players who averaged more than 20 points a game this season, only 10 will be playing in the NCAA tournament. They are, with national rank and scoring average:

So much for experience. Two of the three best shooters, percentage-wise, in the tournament are freshmen -- forward Brandan Wright of North Carolina and center Greg Oden of Ohio State. Wright's 66% (186 for 282) ranked fourth in the nation, and Oden's 61.4% (132 for 215) was 14th. Of the NCAA's top 50 in shooting percentage, only four were guards -- and none of them is still playing.
