50th anniversary has the Joffrey jumping

March 22, 2007

The Joffrey Ballet celebrates its 50th anniversary with two special programs at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion this weekend. Tonight the company dances George Balanchine's "Apollo," along with two of the company's most celebrated revivals of "lost" or neglected masterworks: Leonide Massine's "Les Presages" and Kurt Jooss' "The Green Table." On Friday and Saturday, the rep switches to pieces that match ballet moves with pop music: Twyla Tharp's "Deuce Coupe" (music by the Beach Boys), Laura Dean's "Sometimes It Snows in April" (music by Prince) and Donald Byrd's "Motown Suite." A free lecture/demonstration by former Joffrey principals is scheduled at noon Saturday in Zipper Hall at the Colburn School, 200 S. Grand Ave. (213) 621-2200, Ext. 276.
