LONDON — A British resident is to be released from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after nearly five years in captivity, the Foreign Office said Thursday.

Bisher Rawi, an Iraqi, has been held at the military prison since it opened in 2002.

Rawi and another British resident, Jamil Banna, were alleged to be Al Qaeda associates.

Rawi and Banna were arrested in the West African nation of Gambia while trying to return to Britain with electronic equipment that authorities described as suspicious. The men's lawyers say it was a battery charger.
