MetroPCS backs off bid for rival

MetroPCS Communications Inc. said it was withdrawing its $4.7-billion bid for Leap Wireless International Inc.

Dallas-based MetroPCS said it "has not been able to engage Leap in meaningful negotiations" about a deal.

Executives of San Diego-based Leap said they remained "open to substantive discussions concerning a strategic combination" between the companies.
