Konrad Oberhuber, 72; art history scholar was an expert on Raphael

Konrad Oberhuber, 72, an art history scholar who specialized in drawings and was considered one of the world's leading experts on the Renaissance artist Raphael, died of brain cancer Sept. 12 in San Diego, his family said.

A native of Linz, Austria, who was educated at the University of Vienna, Oberhuber was director of the Albertina graphic arts museum in Vienna from 1987 to 2000. Earlier he had been a curator at the museum, which maintains a comprehensive collection of Old Master drawings, as well as works by such modern artists as Pablo Picasso and John Baldessari.

Before taking over the Albertina, Oberhuber was a professor of fine arts at Harvard University and curator of drawings at the university's Fogg Art Museum. He also worked as a research curator at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in the early 1970s.

Oberhuber lived in Vienna and San Diego.
