Tropical storm brushes Outer Banks
Tropical Storm Gabrielle washed ashore and crawled slowly along the Outer Banks, but it caused few problems and failed even to chase vacationers away from the beach.
Gabrielle, which forecasters expected to head back out to sea, brought gusty 50-mph winds that churned up the surf, delighting surfers and kiteboarders. Officials said the storm probably would be remembered mostly as an inconvenience.
NEVADA False hopes litter search for FossettHopes were briefly raised when rescue crews searching for adventurer Steve Fossett discovered what they thought was a downed airplane near where he took off Sept. 3.
But it wasn't his plane and they found no trace of the missing aviator. At least six times during the search rescue crews have spotted wreckage they thought might be Fossett's, only to learn it was from crashes years -- sometimes decades -- ago.

Peruvian police consider William Trickett Smith Jr. a suspect in the death and are seeking, through Interpol, to bring him to Peru, authorities said.
Smith, 26, of Harrisburg met university student Jana Gomez Menendez de Smith, 21, a Peru native, over the Internet last year and married her in March, the woman's family said.
