Don't compare Iraq, Afghanistan

September 18, 2007

Re "The other war we're losing," Opinion, Sept. 13

I've been living the last 15 months in Afghanistan running an information technology company. Having spoken to soldiers and civilians who were in Iraq, I know that the comparisons between the two countries could not be more invalid. There are challenges, of course. We do have on average about five hours of electricity a day; yes, there are no proper maps or directions; yes, there's chaos when rebuilding a state from scratch. But to compare Afghanistan to Iraq, where your life expectancy as an ex-patriot outside of the vehicle or compound is 15 minutes?
