Schools superintendent announces resignation

The superintendent of the San Diego Unified School District announced Wednesday that he is leaving his job by year's end, 18 months before his contract expires.

Carl A. Cohn, 61, became superintendent of the 133,000-student district in July 2005. He worked 10 years as superintendent of the Long Beach district.

Cohn's decision surprised school board members.
