September 22, 2007|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Former Mayor Jack van Haastert pleaded guilty Friday to filing a false document and to conflict of interest, Riverside County Deputy Dist. Atty. Michael Cabral said.

The charges stem from failing to report his financial relationship to his daughter's day-care center and giving the organization half a million dollars in government loans.

Van Haastert was sentenced to three years' probation, 30 days of weekends at Riverside County Jail, 500 hours of community service and a $9,000 fine, Cabral said.
