Charred bodies in car could be those of Huntington Beach couple

Two bodies found in a burning car near Landers may have been a murder-suicide, authorities said Tuesday.

The unidentified bodies are thought to be those of a man and woman in their 70s from Huntington Beach, said Arden Wiltshire, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies were called to the 600 block of Cady Road about 2:30 p.m. Monday by reports of a vehicle fire. Inside the car they found two bodies burned beyond recognition. After investigation, they now believe the couple left their Huntington Beach home Monday morning.

"They believe the female drove the male to the Landers area and parked behind a cabin," Wiltshire said. "Investigators are looking into the possibility that the male was killed before the fire."

A spokeswoman for the coroner's office said officials had not determined the identity of the couple or the causes of death.
