Old California charm
NEWLY built with an Old California flavor, this house is in an equestrian community in the middle of Brentwood that has grabbed its share of headlines.
During a 2002 transaction, film director Steven Spielberg and his actress-wife, Kate Capshaw, bought the main horse-riding area from the L.A. Unified School District for $12 million, then donated the property to establish the Sullivan Canyon Preservation Assn., which operates the riding rings.
The property, originally earmarked for an elementary school in anticipation of rising enrollments that never materialized, had been used as a community equestrian club for decades.
About this house: The Spanish-style estate, hidden behind a private hedge and adjacent to the equestrian center, is one of about 20 built in the last 10 years by Hugh H. Evans III and Christopher Liebes in Brentwood and Pacific Palisades. Evans, who has the listing, splits his time between being a developer and a real estate agent.
Asking price: $15.25 million
Size: There are six bedrooms and nine bathrooms in 10,116 square feet. The three-story home was built on nearly two-thirds of an acre.
Features: The gated estate has a pool, barn and paddock. The stable is detached. The grounds are lush and have private patios, gardens, fountains and a four-car garage. The house has 23-foot ceilings, a den, office, basement and large master-bedroom suite. There are seven fireplaces.
Where: The Sullivan Canyon area of Brentwood
Listing agent: Hugh H. Evans III, Prudential California Realty, (310) 820-9388 or (310) 801-4201.
