The class of ‘79
The collaboration mixes ’70s-style romance with a rock fest vibe.
MILLA JOVOVICH and Carmen Hawk are no strangers to the cheap chic collaborations – they did a line for the Spanish brand Mango last year – and now they’re bringing their vintage-inspired aesthetic to a limited-edition collection for Target.
The collection looks like Carly Simon’s suitcase exploded. It has a romantic bohemian vibe, not unlike what the L.A. designers do for their main line, Jovovich-Hawk. There are also shades of “Taxi Driver”-era Jodie Foster in the short, swirl-print day dresses, denim gauchos, flutter-sleeve blouses and apron-front frocks in bright colors. All you need is a floppy, wide-brim hat and some oversized sunglasses and you’re ready … for a rock festival.
The best piece is a cream, pin-tucked woven top. The bell-shaped sleeves are extra feminine, and the fabric feels more substantial than that of any of the other items. Delicate embroidery at the neckline is a nice touch, especially considering the $26.99 price tag.
A black stretch-lace dress ($39.99) is a different story. Stretch lace is often cheap-looking, and that’s the case with this tiered, tank style. It’s just plain flimsy.
Most items, such as a chiffon apron-style dress ($39.99) and cream, eyelet minidress ($34.99), graze mid-thigh or above. That means boots or sandals work best, along with a pair of great legs. Still, the designs are sweet, with lace trims and bow-front ties balancing out the super short lengths.
The designers’ line for Mango included more versatile silhouettes. And though that collection spanned the ’60s, this one is a hazy ’70s fantasy, terry-cloth hot pants and all.
