Slow start continues for Tigers, who fall to 0-4 after 8-5 loss to White Sox

Not exactly the start they hoped for. “We’ve just got bad combinations going,” Manager Jim Leyland said. “We got pretty good pitching the first three games. Today we swung the bat better, but we didn’t add runs and didn’t pitch quite as well.”

* at Baltimore 7, Seattle 4: The Orioles ranked 11th in the league in home runs last season. Their bullpen was 13th with a lofty 5.71 earned-run average. So after the Orioles hit three homers and received a solid performance from four relievers, Manager Dave Trembley had a three-word explanation: “This is 2008,” he said.

* at Toronto 6, Boston 3: Frank Thomas doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, Shaun Marcum improved to 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in four starts against the Red Sox, and the Blue Jays improved to 24-8 in home openers in front of a sellout crowd of 50,171.

* at Minnesota 4, Kansas City 3: The Twins won the game, but they lost right fielder and clubhouse leader Michael Cuddyer in the fourth inning to a dislocated and lacerated right index finger when he collided awkwardly with Alex Gordon on a head-first slide into third base.

* at Oakland 6, Cleveland 3: Justin Duchscherer yielded one run in five innings in his first start since 2003, helping the A’s to a win that was tempered by the right-hander leaving the game because of biceps tendinitis.

* Tampa Bay 13, at New York 4: Pinch-hitter Shawn Riggans hit a three-run double and Carlos Pena a three-run homer during a seven-run eighth inning.

* Texas 11, at Angels 6: The Rangers built an 11-0 lead and the Angels didn’t score until the ninth.
