La La La Human Steps: ‘Amjad’ at Royce Hall
MODERN VS. CLASSICAL
Ballet prepares for battle as Montreal troupe La La La Human Steps fires a cannonball into “Swan Lake” and dodges scraps of music en pointe in the U.S. premiere of “Amjad” at UCLA’s Royce Hall. To deconstruct the ballet, composers David Lang and Gavin Bryars wrote a score for four musicians and, as Lang describes it, the “high velocity, speeded-up, angular aggressive motion” of Édouard Lock’s choreography.
