UNDERRATED/OVERRATED
TACOS TUMBRA A TOMAS
This tiny stand in downtown L.A.’s bustling Grand Central market (317 S. Broadway, stall A-5) offers mouth-watering burritos ($5), tacos ($2) and tortas ($5) that are guaranteed to put you into a food coma without breaking the bank.
HOLLYWOOD BLONDE
The beer, not the stereotype ( www.greatbeerco.com). The Kölsch-style beer is brewed by Maribeth Raines-Casselman, who was a biochemist in UCLA’s radiation oncology department. We get ours from Mayfair Market in Hollywood (5877 Franklin Ave.)
SIXTH STREET
From Western to Crescent Heights, this is one of the greenest, least-congested stretches of road in the city. And dig those old mansions.
DU-PAR’S CHOCOLATE CREAM PIE
Forget “brownie” points: If you get invited to a picnic or potluck, bring one of these babies from the Farmers Market, Studio City or Thousand Oaks locations. It’ll be devoured with alacrity, your hosts will remember you favorably, and best of all, you’ll be out only 10 bucks.
PARKING BARONS’ MASS-TRANSIT IDEAS
Free shuttle buses from the Dodger Stadium parking lot to Saturday night’s big charity game at the Coliseum? Sounded like a good idea – until demand septupled supply. The thousands who stewed at the stadium on Saturday could have used a chill-pill concession.
THE GROUNDLINGS SUNDAY SHOW
The company certainly has the pedigree for hilarity, but the Sunday night show (which is cheaper than other Groundlings shows) is clearly the junior varsity squad. When the director abruptly changed an audience suggestion for a place during an improv set from “a sewer” to “waiting in line to pay your sewer bill,” we knew we were in trouble.
MCDONALD’S
On a recent visit to the Sunset and Fountain location, we found the staff was charging the same price for their value meals despite the soda dispenser being broken. We thought that was a rip-off so we asked if they’d upgrade the value meal to include a shake. They said we’d have to pay regular price for the shake plus the cost of the value meal despite the fact that there was no drink in it. Not lovin’ it!
