Ducks' Rob Niedermayer out for tonight's game
DUCKS REPORT
Right wing is suffering from concussion-like symptoms that leave him questionable for rest of playoff series against Dallas.
Ducks right wing Rob Niedermayer will not play in tonight's Game 3 of the Western Conference quarterfinals against Dallas because of concussion-like symptoms that put his status in doubt for the rest of the series.
The symptoms resulted from a hit Niedermayer took at the 12 minute 22 second mark of the third period in their 5-2 loss Saturday. Ducks Coach Randy Carlyle said Niedermayer made the officials aware of the problem Sunday morning before the team left for Dallas.
"He's feeling nauseous," Carlyle said. "Not feeling just right. Specifically it happens more when he's traveling in a vehicle. We felt it wouldn't be very smart to put him in an airplane.
"At this point, he's not traveling today. Who's to say he couldn't travel here tomorrow."
Niedermayer, a key part of the team's checking line, was on the receiving end of a hit that Ducks left wing Travis Moen put on Dallas forward Brenden Morrow.
"He actually got run into," Carlyle said. "It was the force of our player hitting one of their players into. One for the books again."
Niedermayer has a history of concussions. The last one occurred two seasons ago when he missed six games. In the 1997-98 season with Florida, the 14-year veteran missed a total of 26 games because of a concussion and post-concussion syndrome.
Carlyle said the hit didn't appear to be that severe "but those things have affected people differently."
"Obviously in this situation, he's not feeling well," he added. "We have to go on the guidance of what the player tells you and what the medical staff tells you and then you make a decision off of that.
"Right now, he has those symptoms and there's no way we're going to put him in a situation where he can injure himself."
All-purpose forward Todd Marchant, who's played on all four lines at times this season, could be the leading candidate to join Moen and Samuel Pahlsson on the checking line.
Carlyle also said winger Corey Perry, out since March 6 because of a torn quadriceps muscle, has not been cleared by doctors. Perry took part in an optional skate today and stayed on the ice for extra work afterward.
"If he's cleared, then we have a decision to make," Carlyle said.
