Drug lord, two bodyguards killed

World in Brief / COLOMBIA

April 30, 2008|From Times Wire Reports

Colombian police killed top drug lord Miguel Angel Mejia, known as "the twin," the defense minister said. The U.S. government was offering a $5-million reward for his capture.

Mejia was killed in northern Colombia along with two bodyguards, and three of his men were arrested, Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos said at a news conference.

Mejia was wearing a U.S. military uniform, Santos said without elaborating. Authorities were led to Mejia by an informant.

Mejia and his brother Victor allegedly started trafficking cocaine before joining far-right paramilitaries. When the paramilitary warlords were required to turn themselves in to the government, the two went on the run.
