Man killed in police shooting in Encino
LAPD officials say the man was carrying a shotgun when officers responding to an assault call encountered him.
Los Angeles police this morning shot and killed a man who was brandishing a shotgun in Encino, authorities said.
The incident took place in the 5800 block of Jamieson Avenue in a residential neighborhood just north of the 101 Freeway and west of White Oak Avenue.
Officer Marjan Mobasser of the Los Angeles Police Department said officers responded to a call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon about 11:20 this morning. When officers arrived, they saw a man walk out with a shotgun and raise it at them, LAPD Sgt. Ruby Malachi said.
The officers fired at the suspect, who was declared dead at the scene by paramedics, Malachi said.
"We don't know very much about the suspect," Malachi said.
A police official familiar with the incident said that in the initial call to police, a person reported shots being fired and a man shouting: "Give me back the shotgun."
Officers responding to the 911 call told investigators that when they arrived they witnessed a man carrying a shotgun as he exited the house.
At that time, at least one officer fired at him, the police official said. It was not clear what took place immediately before the shooting.
Resident Ron Traylor, 62, who has lived in the neighborhood for 30 years, said he was in bed "when I heard a single gunshot."
"Then I heard several shots," he added.
Elsie Myregard, 84, has lived in the 5800 block of Jamieson Avenue for about 60 years. She said she did not know the neighbors at the home where the shooting took place today.
"There have been incidents of police but nothing like what's going on right now," she said. "For me, I always thought it was a pretty good area."
